Speech and Drama

Having Speech and Drama lessons in a group is a good way to begin. It makes the student feel more at ease and more willing to open up.

Lessons are of 1 hour duration each.

* Students at each level may choose to take a Speech and Drama or Acting examination from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (L.A.M.D.A.)

Group 1 - 5, 6, 7 year olds

The objective at this stage is to put in place basic skills and nurture an interest in the subject. We want them to have fun! Communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) are developed through games, improvisations, role-play, story telling, and poetry and prose.

Choral speaking is used to develop teamwork. A combination of phonics and word recognition will be used to improve the students’ sight reading.

Group 2 - 8, 9, 10 year olds

At this age, the student begins to question more and seek answers. This is encouraged. Communication skills are developed further and more theory is introduced. Games, improvisations, role-play, story telling, and poetry and prose will be introduced.

Scenes from plays are used to introduce the concepts of plot, objectives and character development. The rules of “StageCraft” will be given.

Group 3 - 11, 12, 13 &14 year olds

At this age, students begin to identify with the issues faced by the characters in the texts (e.g. bullying, cheating, stealing). These issues are explored in greater depth through the text and improvisation. Refinement of communication skills continues through poems, poetry and choral speaking. Students will be exposed to a wider range of literature from different time periods.

Another valuable discipline that is introduced to students at this stage is presentation skills. Students will learn research skills, how to write a speech, effective body language, consideration of space and audience and use of multimedia “good or bad.”

Group 4 - 15, 16, 17 & 18 year olds

We will continue to look at poetry and prose (although the level of the pieces will be much higher). Games, role-play and improvisation will continue and are centered around the piece being examined. This affords the student a more in-depth understanding of the text. Games, role-play and improvisation are also used as a means of character development.

Adult Acting Experience

Ever harboured dreams of being an actor? Want to see what it would really be like to give up that day job and strut your stuff? This five-session course (two hours per session) will give you a taster of what it is like to be an actor.

This experience is good as an alternative to the usual team building exercises to help individuals bond and encourages clearer communication skills and thinking out of the box skills and will be a lot of fun!

Minimum of ten members per class.

Effective Communication (for adults)

This is a two-day workshop focusing on communication skills in the workplace. We will look at effective use of voice and body language (what to look for and what to avoid).

Individual Speech and Drama lessons are available for all ages.
